Influencer Marketing
Earned Media Value (EMV)
An estimate of what a piece of influencer content would have cost as paid advertising, used to justify influencer marketing spend to stakeholders.
What it means
EMV translates the impressions, engagement, and reach a piece of influencer content generated into a dollar figure, by comparing it to what equivalent paid advertising costs. It puts a number on the earned, organic-feeling attention a campaign generated, on top of what the brand paid the creator. It's directional and marketing-facing, not a precise financial metric. It's useful for internal reporting, less useful for deciding whether to renew a deal.
Examples
- •A campaign that generated 500,000 impressions gets an EMV based on typical CPM rates for that content type.
- •A brand reports 'EMV of $50,000 against $10,000 spent' in a board deck to show a 5x return.
- •Agencies use EMV to compare influencer campaign value against traditional media buys.
Use cases
- •Reporting campaign impact to executives or clients in familiar advertising terms.
- •Comparing the relative value of different campaigns at a glance.
- •Justifying continued influencer marketing budget internally.
Why it matters
EMV works for storytelling but shouldn't replace hard metrics like CPA or ROI when deciding where to spend next. It estimates attention value, not revenue generated.
