Engagement Rate

The percentage of a creator's audience that actively interacts (likes, comments, shares, saves) with their content, relative to follower count or reach. A stronger signal of influence than follower count alone.

What it means

Engagement rate divides total interactions, likes, comments, shares, sometimes saves, by follower count, then multiplies by 100. Most brands treat it as a better indicator of real influence than raw follower count, since it reflects an interested, likely-to-convert audience instead of a passive or partly fake one. Engagement rate tends to fall as follower count rises. Nano and micro creators often post double-digit rates that mega creators rarely match.

Examples

  • A creator with 5,000 followers averaging 400 likes and 50 comments per post runs roughly a 9% engagement rate.
  • A brand rules out a creator with a large following but a suspiciously low sub-1% engagement rate.
  • A campaign report highlights engagement rate alongside reach to show content quality, beyond size alone.

Use cases

  • Vetting a creator before a deal, especially to spot inflated or fake followings.
  • Comparing creators of different sizes on level terms.
  • Tracking whether a creator's audience quality improves or declines over time.

Why it matters

A high engagement rate usually predicts stronger campaign performance than raw reach. An engaged audience trusts a recommendation and acts on it, which is why many brands now prioritize engagement rate over follower count.

Common questions

Roughly: above 6% is excellent, 3 to 6% is good, 1 to 3% is average, below 1% is weak. The right benchmark depends on platform and follower tier. Check a specific account with our engagement rate calculator.
